In 2020, there was a project of the National Intellectual Property Administration involving 12 industrial patent analysis topics. Over 200 units across the country applied for it. Since only one group could apply for each topic, 95% of the applicants were eliminated in the initial selection. Moreover, after the research projects were implemented, 7 topics failed to meet the expected goals due to either inability to complete the project or substandard quality. As a result, only the achievements of 5 topics were approved for publication and distribution in the end. 



This project is the Patent Analysis Popularization and Promotion Project. It was initiated by the National Intellectual Property Administration. By conducting patent analysis for emerging industries, it aims to assist Chinese industrial enterprises in overcoming key technological obstacles and breaking through development bottlenecks. Industries such as energy conservation and environmental protection, new energy, new materials, and high-end equipment manufacturing are all important research fields of this project.

These industries are called "emerging industries" because they started relatively late in China, while foreign countries generally have leading or mature technologies. For example, in the field of commercial aircraft, our Chinese company was established in 2008, while the French Airbus was founded in 1970 and the American Boeing in 1916, which is almost 100 years earlier than us. Their technological accumulation must be considerable.

Therefore, the popularization and promotion project of patent analysis is a very meaningful thing. Through research and analysis, we can clarify the gap between us and developed countries, identify the reasons that restrict our own development, and then summarize the solutions to form the "Industrial Patent Analysis Report" for publication, so that domestic enterprises can have something to refer to. This is beneficial to the development of enterprises and the entire industry without any harm.

Emerging industries such as new energy and new materials have been taking up an increasingly large share in the national economy. However, they are also confronted with problems such as the urgent need for breakthroughs in scientific research. Therefore, the significance of the patent analysis popularization and promotion project is self-evident. For several consecutive years, the National Intellectual Property Administration has mentioned in its annual work priorities that "the patent situation of emerging industries should be emphasized, multiple 'Industry Patent Analysis Reports' should be released, and these achievements should be fully utilized."

Therefore, it is quite understandable that the National Intellectual Property Administration has high requirements and strict acceptance standards for this project. Next, taking the "High-performance Adsorption and Separation Resin and Key Application Technologies" project jointly undertaken by Sanju Sunshine and Xi'an Lanxiao Technology as an example, this article will introduce the technical field involved in the project, the research process, and the value of the project.

High-performance adsorption and separation resins may sound unfamiliar at first, but in fact, they are everywhere in our daily lives. For instance, in the high-end water purifiers installed on household faucets, there are such resins. When water flows through them, they can adsorb impurities completely. Besides, in industrial fields like pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, and food processing, they are also needed to purify or separate various substances in raw materials. Therefore, this seemingly unfamiliar technology is not only widely applied but also closely related to our daily lives.

The process of this project research is quite similar to a doctor's diagnosis. A doctor will first have a general understanding of the patient's condition, then conduct tests such as blood tests, X-rays, and electrocardiograms to fully understand the illness. Finally, based on the diagnosis results, the doctor will arrange for medication or surgery. After the treatment is completed, the doctor will also advise the patient on what to pay attention to, what to do more of, and what to do less of, etc.

The first step of this research topic is to understand the general development situation of the industry. High-performance adsorption and separation resins belong to the new materials industry. The current situation is somewhat similar to the domestic mobile phone market many years ago. High-end mobile phones like Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung were all foreign brands. In this industry, the high-end business is dominated by enterprises from Germany, the United States, Japan, and other countries. China's high-end production capacity is insufficient, and imports are needed to meet the demands of high-end application fields.

The second step of the research is to fully understand and address the development "bottlenecks" of the industry. Lanxiao Technology is a leading enterprise in the domestic high-molecular adsorption and separation materials industry. Sanju Sunshine and Lanxiao Technology have conducted the following research on the adsorption and separation technologies in each subfield of this industry: overall patent analysis; major patent source countries; patent layout in China; technical characteristics of foreign companies and patent technology characteristics in various application fields, etc. Finally, they summarized the bottlenecks and pain points of the entire industry, provided solutions, and offered reference directions for technological research and development.

The third step of the research is to organize and publish the results. The research achievements of Sanju Sunshine and Lanxiao Technology have finally passed the final review of the Academic Committee of the National Intellectual Property Administration and are about to be published as the 83rd volume of the "Industrial Patent Analysis Report" series. This research outcome will have a profound impact on understanding the current development status of the high-molecular adsorption separation resin industry, predicting the future direction of the industry, helping enterprises accurately identify research and development directions, and doing a good job in patent risk early warning.
